Alcohol Usage

Can you or do you drink alcohol after surgery.  I can only assume that with the lack of ability to drink more than a few ounces this ends drinking for the most part.

I have not personally consumed alcohol after surgery, but my doctor discourages it for several different reasons.

1. Higher likely hood of developing an alcohol dependance, because after weightloss surgery it may be tempting to replace food with alcohol.

2. After weightloss surgery patients should avoid consuming liquid calories of any type.

3. Alcohol may be absorbed much more quickly after weightloss surgery resulting in a sigificant jump in blood alcohol.

Again I am not speaking from experince...I am just passing along advice from my doctor.

I drink. Low carb drinks so like vodka and a mixer. Sometimes a glass of red wine. Here's the weird thing about alcohol after surgery. It's very weird for me because I'll have a drink or two, get more drunk then I meant to then I'm super sober. I think it's because our bodies process everything super quickly.

I haven't figured it all out exactly and I only drink every once in a while and I'm losing weight so fast it's hard to settle into a good balance. Hope that makes sense.

How long after surgery did you wait to drink?  I miss my red wine!  I only have a glass or two a week, but I do miss it!

Yes, this is exactly how it feels! Just be careful and be several months out so you can ensure your tummy is healed.

I waited 3 months. Let me stress that my doctor is super liberal. He wants me to live a normal life so I don't feel deprived. I was eating food in 18 days.

He doesn't mind soda or alcohol. He just lets me know if I'm screwing up but I'm doing great so far!

Not saying this is for everyone. I don't want people to come after me lol.

What Juddfan said - as well as the others.

I would also add that alcohol is very calorically dense.  I would not drink at all during weight loss.  That is just empty calories that you dont need to take in.  Every calorie that you drink is a calorie that you are not burning in fat or a calorie that is not being used to get the protein you need.

Oh and one other thing. I NEVER eat after I consume any alcohol. If I decide to have a drink, it's the end of the night.

I tend to notice lots of folks that are at their goal weight will indulge in a weekly drink.  Especially those that surpass their goal weight!  I def think I will have a drink!  I think I will wait till I meet my half way goal!  :)

I've had a few sips - tastes of my daughters drink.  Not much at all.  I was waiting until I hit onderland.  Now that I'm here I want to get to goal.  Drinking just isn't as important as losing the weight to me.  I'll have a little once I get where I want to go, but I'm not there yet!
