Is VSG as effective as RNY for controlling diabetes?

It was for me... my blood sugar was consistently normal within a week of surgery.  Everyone is different, but I've seen several good results here.

FYI.....I am Type II diabetic and have been on insulin shots for many years.  After surgery my readings were good so my surgeon took me off of all insulin when I left the hospital.  This was a HUGE mistake.  Most people go home without needing medication but I was on short acting and long acting insulin.  Within two weeks my sugars were almost 500.  They ran 300 - 465 for two more weeks.  We have now started my shots back.  Be very careful if your doc takes you off of insulin shots.  I suspect that my blood sugar readings will become much better and without near as much medication.

I had the sleeve also for this reason.  I was on 4 shots of insulin for 2years.  I stopped the insulin after surgery and can not get below 170. In the morning.  My. Endo keeps trying this pill and now victoza.  She has not found anything that works.  I guess insulin is back in my future also.  I have lost 41 lbs also.  I guess I was on insulin too long.

I haven't taken my meds since my surgery (6 weeks ago) and my numbers are better then they were with meds! I consider myself RID of diabetes completely.

First thing in the morning and my # is about 110!

Hi- diabetic for approx. 7 years on meteor in and glipizide. I had lost approx 105 lbs. before surgery, and was off the glipizide in the last few months. After the surgery, I have not had to take any metforman either. How I understand things is the surgery allows some of us to "tightly controll our diabetes"- or, at best the condition goes into remission. No guarantees it will permanently stay away- maybe so-maybe not. I'm hoping for the best, and greatful for this sleeve that helps me eat the way I was always supposed to as a diabetic.

Left the hospital off both hbp and diabetes meds and fasting bloods have been between 83 and 103 ever since. Over 100 only 2x since surgery.  Perfect bp. Feeling great and hoping for lasting effects.  Good luck to you!
