I've been reading about the benefits of probiotics and RNY and bypass  surgery. Does anyone here with a sleeve useprobiotics and do you find they help with acid and/or digestion? In particular the burping and gurgling?

Hi,

I had to take a strong dose of antibiotics after surgery,  so I took probiotics for a couple weeks after the antibiotics.  I know that my surgeon was ok with taking them.  I don't have much trouble with digestion or acid, so I can't comment if it helped that.

Good luck,

Carol

just started taking probiotics so I don't quite know how they will affect anything. Howver, I can tell you in my case the gurgling gets better in time. My throat used to gurgle every time I ate or drank, but that's improved. Mostly now I gurgle if I eat something liquidy with chunks, like chili.

I take them everyday.  They provide good gut bacteria and also keep things moving.  I also heard that they can help boost immunity.

I just found out yesterday at my surgeon office that his program desire us to take a multi strain probiotic. My surgeon told me that EVERYONE needs to take one for healthy tummy and digestion. Not just bariatric patients. I'm going to try to get my mom and dad on them. Brother too if possible.

I take them and have every day since postop. In the beginning, it was necessary to help keep things regular. and now, I use it to help control digestion/gas/bloat and whatnot. It is important tho to take a multi-strain one. and mine isn't cheap. This is one of those cases where less expensive isn't better.

As far as whether it will help with acid/burping, I doubt. For this, you will need a PPI and some find papaya enzymes to be helpful as well.

Thanks for all the feedback. I may give them a try. The acid issue is really minor and I don't think it's worth taking anything heavy for that. I do wish the gurgling and burping would settle down. I work close with my patients and it can be embarrassing. LOL It has gotten better over time so it may just be a waiting game.
