Question:
Atkins diet, is it okay to use to help 'jump start' weight loss post op?

I'm 20 months post op and still want to lose 20lbs before my TT, is the Atkins diet a safe option for RNY'ers? I need to jump start my weight loss. Thanks    — Monica J. (posted on April 1, 2003)

My opinion would be yes. It is a low carb high protien diet. Which is exactly what we should be doing. I would be careful with the amount of fat you take in though. From what I can remember the Atkins diet doesn't monitor fat intake. Good luck! Laurey/OpenRNY/1-15-03/-44

Monica, The atkins diet is fine, I talked with my doctor about 2 weeks ago about it and no problem, he didn't say anything about the high fat though, I try to watch it as I don't want it to get out of hand, I've been on it for 7 day and have lost 6 pounds, I'm about 16 pounds away from goal, so it's definetly worth the try. Hope it helps, post op 10 months down 127 pounds

Monica, I think that would be fine to use. Like the previous poster said, that is pretty much how we're supposed to eat anyway. Mostly protein, then veggies, then carbs. Also, many people jumpstart their weightloss again by doing a 2 week liquid diet, just like what we had to do when we were early post-op. So either way, one should work for you. Goodluck to you!
