No, I didn't aske my surgeon/nutritionist, mostly because I know it's a bad idea... It's good to hear some reminders and 'backlash' to my Christmas cheer :) thank you!!

My surgeon says no alcohol for one year after surgery.  You need to be careful, because you will have a much different reaction to alcohol now that you are post-op.  If you call your surgeon, he will more than likely tell you not to drink yet.

What does your surgeon/nutritionist have to say about alcohol at less than a month out from surgery?

I said goodbye to alcohol when I started my pre-op diet. It doesn't provide anything that our bodies NEED, and transfer addictions are a really serious risk after surgery.

Good point! I don't want/need to transfer any addictions!!

You're not "bound" to have a glass of wine. You choose whether or not to have it. Here's the reasons you should choose not to have a glass of wine --

  1. The empty calories (as you noted).
  2. You should never drink your calories unless they're protein shakes during recovery from surgery.
  3. The alcohol will be very irritating to your new sleeve, which is not yet healed.
  4. Since you can't drink while you eat, you would have to down the wine on an empty sleeve. You may have read that one drink hits VSGers the same way three drinks would before they were sleeved. It's true. I tested that rule, but I did so long after my sleeve was healed. One glass of wine and I literally saw double. It wasn't pretty.

It's your choice. But, IMO, not a good idea.

During rapid weight loss, your liver is forced to work extra hard to flush out the fats and toxins from your system.  Adding alcohol to an already stressed liver is not  good idea.

You can have a good time without alcohol.  Drink diet cranberry juice out of a wine glass if you feel like you want to "fit in".

Wow b3th2882 you really like to poke the bear don't you?  After reading your back posts... don't you think you have had enough challenges? Why not just sit back and put your mind into the game for at least 9 months before you purposely put yourself in harm's way?

Good luck on your journey - you're gonna need it!

Like Pete said, gastritis. No bueno- been there, done that, avoid this! Cross addiction is something to be fearful of. I am not a drinker by any definition- prior to surgery at most a drink a month type. I now occasionally have a glass of cherry wine, and it is shocking what it does to me. Totally hammered off of 2 glasses, or 1 glass if I consume it in less than 10 minutes. For the first time I could really see how people can rapidly develop an addiction, because for the first time when I drank I actually wanted more even though I was aware that it was rapidly hitting my system.  It is not that I am a totally newbie to drinking- did my share back in the college days too. Do yourself a favor and just don't go down that rabbit hole.

Id suggest talking to your doctor before adding wine this early out.  The first few months the tummy is healing and alcohol could irritate it.  Make sure your doctor is ok with it.

Once your tummy is healed, a little wine is fine.  But do be careful because there is a tendency for "transfer addiction" and a high incidence of alcoholism after WLS.

Happy holidays!
